Cyber Security Conference on Industrial Control Systems
New Delhi, Delhi, India
Crux Creative Solutions Pvt. Ltd., a security research based organization successfully hosted one of the most focused Cyber Security conferences: CyCron, with a focus on Managing Cyber Security threats to SCADA and Industrial Control Systems". The event took place on 24th February 2016 at Hotel Pullman, Aerocity, New Delhi.
This Strategic Thought Leadership Platform brought together more than 150 highly coveted Cyber Security Experts to address challenges and map the way forward.
CyCron was supported by the leading think tanks in India, including: Indian Smart Grid Forum, Petrofed and Data Security Council of India (a NASSCOM Initiative). PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), a multinational global consultancy firm was the Knowledge Partner for the event.
CEO of Crux Creative Solutions PVT. Ltd. Shelly Bhasin emphasized on the need of better coordination between IT and OT teams. During her opening address, she said, “Every country relies on critical infrastructure to provide essential services and Industrial control systems (ICS) are the “nervous systems” that manage operations and functions for many of these critical infrastructures. As the threat of cyber-attacks are increasing day by day, hence those responsible for designing and maintaining these systems have had to think more and more about security. While technologies are often the focus of ICS vulnerabilities, but the greatest challenge is to resolve the cultural differences related to OT and IT teams. It is important to understand the concerns of your OT counterparts. And establish a team of interested individuals from across the stakeholder groups and have regular meetings to develop the ICS security strategy and goals together. It's important to remember that successful ICS security programs are about people. Organizations that identify an executive-level security leader who is responsible for security across both IT and OT will move faster than organizations that rely on grass-roots efforts.”
Mr. Sachin Burman, Director, National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Centre threw light on the measures taken by the Government of India in securing the critical infrastructure of the country. During his keynote address, he emphasized on what is critical and what needs to be protected. He also mentioned that ownership of security is also important and senior management should start taking interest in security issues related to their organization as they are the ones who face maximum losses.
Mr. Siddharth Vishwanath, Partner, Cyber Security, PwC spoke about “how hackers cause physical damage in the OT world, to which he suggested that the OT world is getting connected to the internet and with such development we need to prepare with adequate focus on ICS. He also stressed on the need of skilled people to address OT ISSUES.”
Mr. Manish Tiwari, CISO, Microsoft shared “that people, process and technology are important to protect critical data. Integrity of data is important. Confidentiality of data should not be compromised.” He also highlighted that 69% of the organization in India does not have a digital strategy. There is a complete disconnect between CISO and CIO fraternity. He also highlighted certain initiatives being taken by the government towards cyber security which includes NCCC steered by CERT- IN, BOTNET REMOVAL CENTRE etc.
Mr. Nandkumar Saravade, CEO, Data Security Council of India (DSCI) highlighted cybersecurity should not be addressed in silos. He stressed the need to have sectorial CERTS in India like the US has ICS- CERT. He suggested the importance of skilled people to handle these kinds of security challenges. Mr. Saravade suggested having a forensic approach for managing ICS Cyber Security Threat. Mr. Saravade also congratulated Crux for organizing this exclusive event on ICS and SCADA security.
