Hazel Media Targets Vernacular Indic Language Applications Ecosystem for Mobile and Tablet Devices

New Delhi, Delhi, India, Thursday, March 24, 2011 — (Business Wire India) — Hazel Media Pvt Ltd, a Mobility Products and Technology startup company, has announced plans to extend its focus on vernacular language support for Mobile and Tablet devices by partnering with content providers and content distributors. The company’s technology, being exhibited at Convergence India 2011 Conference Expo in New Delhi from 24th to 26th March, helps create vernacular content applications rapidly for feature phones, smart phones, and tablet devices.

Hazel Media is developing technology to enable interaction in vernacular Indic languages like Hindi and Marathi via mobile applications across various device platforms. The company foresees a vernacular Indic language applications ecosystem in future. Textual content and interaction on mobile devices takes three forms: one involving Web or WAP browsing, second involving SMS or messaging, and third one being via mobile applications. The third form, mobile applications, is the most versatile, and also the most limited by the lack of in-built Unicode or fonts support in mobile devices. What further discourages mobile application developers is that very few technologies currently incorporate the ligatures in Indian vernacular languages like Hindi and Marathi.

“Our technology applies a platform-agnostic and device-agnostic paradigm, where a device with basic capabilities is able to display vernacular language content without requiring in-built support for the languages”, said Manish Malik, Founder and CEO of Hazel Media. The technology framework developed by the company takes a developer-friendly approach and aims to make it easier for developers to integrate the technology in their applications. “While there are other technology frameworks available and some of them have been used in popular news and social applications, we are yet to see any one of them targeted towards making rapid development of more multilingual mobile applications easier. The framework already supports Java, BlackBerry, and Android devices, and we are looking at MeeGo, bada, and Windows Phone platforms next”, Manish added.

As a part of its own development process over the last few months, the company had released simple mobile-learning games, called ‘mPustak’ incorporating substantial Hindi and Marathi language interfaces. The company has currently shared a pre-release Hindi version of their Cricket scores application, ‘CricMeter’, with a number of enthusiastic users. “We are actively talking to and looking for ecosystem partners to create applications that reach out to the masses”, Manish said.

The applications can be downloaded from various application download stores by searching for ‘mPustak’ or via . More information on Hazel Media Pvt Ltd and its products can be obtained from its website
